What is a DIY Sniff Box?
A DIY sniff box is a fantastic enrichment activity for dogs that uses their natural sniffing behavior to provide mental stimulation and a fun way to eat their meals. Essentially, it’s a large box (or even a kiddie pool) filled with your dog’s toys, with treats or food hidden inside some of the toys. This activity encourages your dog to use their nose to find the hidden goodies, turning mealtime into an engaging and enriching experience.

How to Create a DIY Sniff Box: Step-by-Step Guide
Creating a DIY sniff box is simple and requires just a few supplies. Here’s how you can set it up:
Supplies Needed:
- Large box or kiddie pool
- Your dog’s toys
- Treats or dog food
I bought a plastic pool from Home Depot, but if you want a pool that saves space these are some great options!
Instructions:
Gather Supplies:
- Find a large box or kiddie pool to serve as the sniff box.
- Collect a variety of your dog’s toys to fill the box or pool.
Hide Treats:
- Hide treats or dog food inside some of the toys. This will encourage your dog to sniff through the toys to find their food.
- I used my dogs food Wellness Core Raw Rev.
Introduce the Sniff Box to Your Dog:
- Bring your dog to the sniff box and let them explore. Encourage them to use their nose to find the hidden treats.
Enjoy the Activity:
- Let your dog sniff away! This simple activity can keep them engaged for an extended period – it took Capri 47 minutes to eat all her food.

Benefits of a DIY Sniff Box:
- Mental Stimulation: Keeps your dog’s mind active.
- Natural Behavior: Encourages natural sniffing instincts.
- Prolonged Mealtime: Makes eating a more engaging experience.
- Easy and Affordable: Simple to set up with items you already have.

My Personal Experience with the DIY Sniff Box Activity
My thoughts on the DIY sniff box activity, inspired by watching Capri doing it.
Initial Reaction:
- Capri was very confused as to why her pool was inside the house. She is used to it being outside with water in it.
- She wasn’t a fan of stepping inside the pool. Not sure why, but I did place her into it after she couldn’t reach the toys near the middle.
Toys Used:
- These are ALL of her toys. I know she has a lot, as I buy many interactive ones. I used a lot of treat dispensing toys in this activity. I’ll post some of our favorites below.
- This was a great way for me to see what toys she likes and doesn’t like. The ones left in the pool at the end of the activity I put away. I rotate her toys so she doesn’t get sick of them.

Activity Duration:
- It really did take her 47 minutes to complete this activity! Yes, I did time her. This is a great activity for puppies and dogs of all ages. It’s easy and simple using toys you already have, and it’s great for their mental stimulation.
- I often use easy DIY enrichment activities with her everyday for feedings.
